BIOGRAPHY

The Calgary Flames said they were amazed that junior scoring star Denis Cyr was still available when they selected him 13th overall in the 1980 Entry Draft. Cyr had come off an amazing junior career in the QMJHL, where he twice scored 70 goals and likely would have made it a third year in a row, had he not been called up to the Flames late in the 198-81 season.
Cyr, known for his rocket fast shot, joined the Montreal Juniors as a 16-year-old, scoring 46 goals and 101 points in 72 games. At 17, Cyr had 70 goals and 56 assists for 126 points in 72 games. He followed that up with another 70-goal season while adding another 20 assists for a 146-point total in 70 games. In 1980-81, as a 19-year-old, Cyr hit the 50-goal plateau in 57 games before being called up to the Flames for the remainder of the season. In ten games with Calgary, he found scoring was not nearly so easy, counting just one goal and five points.
In 1981-82, Cyr played in 45 games with the Flames, scoring 12 goals and 22 points. Clearly the scoring was not coming as easy to Cyr in the faster, tougher professional ranks. Early in the 1982-83 season, Cyr was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, but he was unable to kick-start his career there either. Cyr bounced around in the minors before the St. Louis Blues gave him the opportunity to regain his lost scoring touch, but again it never panned out. In 193 NHL games, Cyr scored 41 goals and 43 assists for 84 points, certainly a much lower total than many had anticipated from this young player coming out of the junior ranks. QMJHL Second All-Star Team (1979)QMJHL First All-Star Team (1980)
